Summer, Full Moons, Baby Birds and Raccoons!

Hello All,

Well...... summer is definitely inarguably here. I sit in the garden in what has now cooled to 94 degree heat (nothing compared to Vegas or the desert) but still pretty darned hot. All the critters have their babies out learning to fly, dig, climb and grow. One thing about California where I always end up coming back to is that nature abounds and grows so plentiful that there is almost nothing that cannot grow here. I imagine polar bears wouldn't be too impressed but then again they're polar bears.
Two new sets of kits from the Raccoon tribes have arrived as well as baby squirrels, baby skunkletts and new baby hummingbirds, baby Mantids, baby California slender Salamanders, many different butterflies and dragonflies to name a few!
I am lucky that I am able finally to slow down long enough to notice the abundance of beauty around me. Learning how to grow things has been a great experience. I used to have a black thumb when it came to anything apart from plants that basically took care of themselves. Through my studies of Herbs and Orchids I've had to learn to curb my over/under watering tendencies. I had to learn to slow down, to be patient and to observe the plants to know when to give them what they need. To some I know the idea of this is beyond boring but it's very rewarding to see a small amount of effort and interest turn into an entire garden filled with life. The plants are what has attracted all the wildlife I'm always going on about. If you create a beautiful safe space for the critters and keep some clean water out for them ( they need this more than you know) they will come to you. They sense it. I've always been a cat rescue person, blessed in that way but to also get to know all this wildlife has been incredible. Did you know that Raccoons use tools?! Science is under the impression that only Ravens and apes use tools but Raccoons do too! They're so clever is mind boggling. They get along well with the skunks although the skunks are definitely the bosses.
I could go on and on about those guys...
On another note I've been writing some new songs that I'm actually quite pleased with and hopefully will be able to record. Musicians though god love them/ I should say "Us " are notoriously hard to pin down as most are ever touring or recording their own stuff so things haven't happened as fast as I'd like them to however one way or another I believe it will happen. Thank you so much to every person who took the time to subscribe to my YouTube page and write in about the music. It means so much to me, it really does. To know that what I write resonates with people is what it's all about. That's what music is for!
I've been working on my Art as well. Most recently I realized that I lean far too heavily towards obsessive perfectionism to the point that It often blocks me off. I destroy 99.999 percent of what I make. As an experiment I decided to take the control away completely by putting down the calligraphy pens and brushes and instead using things that I cannot control like sticks, pine needles, the edges of leaves. It's very much like being a child again in terms of freeing you up from those constraints of hyper focus on controlled lines.
I started drawing sketch ideas this way with India Ink , some Abstract works and some of the idea of Angels and saints. There are so many different interpretations of what those beings could look like. Early Judaic descriptions are fiery and terrifyingly severe multi winged flame eyed beings of light. I've only really just begun to study saints but I like the idea. People who were touched by grace or madness or the divine. These days they'd probably be categorized as either Artists or mad people or maybe both.
I mean as Artists that is what we strive towards, to essentially be a conduit to the powers that be, the muse, the inspiration, so it can come through us.
It isn't often that it happens but when it does the feeling is so wonderful.
A film I worked on called "Battle Scars" opens this week in theatres and video on demand so that's exciting. The production has been tweeting on my page so for more info on that you can follow they're links. Some of you who haven't been following me on twitter for long have asked if I've quit acting. The answer to that is a resounding NO! However, I am very selective these days insofar as what I choose to put my time and energy into. It has to be a project I believe in. Life is too short to waste time on bad Art. I've made around 73 films or some number around there and I hope to be able to continue to act until I'm an old lady. That's partly why I stepped away from doing a ton of press when I did. They love to misrepresent actors, when it comes to me especially. If you are too omnipresent you can wear your self out and others. It's also a very good thing to be able to explore other art forms.
It has made me a much happier person and I am so grateful that I can spend time doing the things I also love like Art and Music. I want to thank every person who has helped to support these endeavors of mine through the Tshirts, photos and Art sales. I <3 you very much for this. You are awesomeness incarnate.
Huge Kisses and hugs to every single one of you, you know who you are;).
For those of you who have read the previous blogs you'll know that I have been trying to help my Mother recover from a serious back injury. It turns out she has acute osteoporosis as well so her recovery is taking a long and arduous time. She is unable to teach so we came up with the idea of making her an Etsy store. She has been a collector of amazing beautiful treasures all of her adventurous and well travelled life and had hoped to one day have a store of her own. Being though that she cannot run a physical shop and We live in different countries we came up with the Etsy Idea. I am extremely new to this whole thing and luckily we have had some friendly help getting it up and running. I didn't want her to be directly accessible to trolls either ( who needs that right?) so questions are answered by a third party.
She has some really pretty amazing stuff, things I certainly never knew she had, very cool indeed. A veritable treasure trove :)
If you would like to go have a look you can find the store at LePetiteEscargot.etsy.com
There is another store by that name in the US but no items listed so if you end up there then you'll know it's not the right spot.
I think Etsy is cool as it gives individuals the ability to get their goods out there whether it's handmade items or antiques or vintage clothes. One thing that is a bit of a mystery is how to get the store seen and I'm told getting the store liked, shared and favorited is essential to it's success so if you do go for a look see please remember to favorite her shop and share it if you would! Many thanks from all of us in advance for your kindness:)
It is A full moon tonight! Clear skies here so I'm hoping to have a great view of La Luna in all her glowing beauty.
There is much more to tell but this blog is getting pretty long at this point and I'm in the garden being roasted alive & the battery is going on this machine so I will bid you a fond adieu for now my friends.
Happy Full Moon!!!!!
Muah!

I do write myself and i know and understand that. When you're a perfectionist or start arranging the lyrics, scripts, stories, all the fun is stripped away and you end up destroying a part of your real good ideas. But most of all, keep believing in your art. Of course i would love to see you in more movies and press just like the Craft, American History x and the Waterboy era, also i wish i'd have the chance to see Battle Scars and August Falls. But most of all i wish you have a good time on movie sets and big movies and media interviews often leads to actors being misinterpreted.:( Keep creating the good indie stuff you believe in at least, it's what is truly rewarding to an artist. I just got back from a convention in Montreal though, a lot of fun but damn, that would be awesome to see you at one someday, to get an autograph from you hand to hand! While waiting, say hi to your cats, raccoons and other animals. Take care of them, of your mom, say hi to Cathryn and your family. And take care of yourself Fairuza. I wish a great album of yours is coming, a cool Horror flick or series and awh! Hell, anything you too wish for has to happen! You truly deserve it. From the bottom of my heart, it meant and means so much to have such a soul living and breathing as an actress and artist. Love ya, deeply. Until next time Fairuza.

Just wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you for all that you do and for also still finding the time to share your world with us, peace, love, and light always.

  • I was turned onto your music by a good friend who thought my tracks reminded her of your work. I very much enjoy your music and would like to send you some of my tracks to give a listen. I play all the instruments and would love to work with you. You can contact me at Therion77793@yahoo.com - you won't be disappointed.

The following was written after browsing a now defunct website back in 2014 and never posted. I stumbled across it while sorting some dusty old files. (Given the length, it might be “better never than late,” rather than the more usual phrase, but oh, well.) October 19, 2014 Dear Ms. Balk: Googling around for Grindstone Road, (which I did obtain and very much enjoyed), led me to your site which, although mostly abandoned in favor of other social media, is still quite impressive. Unfortunately, I do not use Facebook, or similar services, so am leaving some comments here -- if they end up consigned to the recycling bin unread no harm will have been done. Having been an admirer of your film work for some time I was particularly struck by the fact that you’re a visual artist as well. The horses are naturalistic and compelling -- stormy -- especially the piece representing a lone animal literally flying at gallop with all four hooves off the ground. And using rust as a medium at first seemed an odd choice but made perfect sense when considered in the context of the pieces continuing to evolve over time. Few people are talented and accomplished in any, let alone multiple creative areas: you seem to be one of them. The links to the sites regarding the Roma and Romani plight brought me up short. As I recall, about six years ago, there were two or three brief articles in the Wall Street Journal describing a significant, and violent, increase in racially motivated crime against the Romani people in some parts of Europe -- mainly Romania and Hungary. The upshot of the articles was overwhelming evidence that members of local Hungarian police forces were organizing and participating in the murder of Romani who owned their own homes. The principal tactic consisted of selecting a victim(s), placing men with rifles in the front of the house and setting fire to the back of the building. When the residents ran out the front they were shot. The reason for the articles seemed to be that recent victims included a family with a woman carrying a small child. All were killed, and although no one apart from the Romani community appeared to give a damn, apparently the event was hideous enough to cause some small comment internationally. These articles were the first -- and only -- reportage I ever saw about the fact that anything of the sort was occurring. A primary reason for the increase in hostility was -- supposedly -- the worldwide financial crisis, and some bizarre, convoluted reasoning tying it to the Romani. (An old, discordant song, with many verses, in many different languages, that has been sung many times before.) In detail, the most common explanation -- and rationalization -- for these acts was that the Romani were not “real” members of the community. They were nomads and vagabonds, siphoning assets by trickery and deceit and stealing away, contributing nothing. The image given was like something from a 1943 Universal horror movie with Maria Ouspenskaya in a wooden wagon bumping along in the Carpathian Mountains telling Lionel Atwill’s fortune and being chased away by the Burgomeister. It was ludicrous. Moreover, such a conception couldn’t possibly be reconciled with the fact that some victims were property owners -- surely a substantial investment in a community and its well-being. Confronted with this inconvenient inconsistency, the perpetrators had further bizarre rationales justifying the murders. The whole thing sounded depressingly familiar. Subsequently, it disappeared without a trace, and to my shame, I did not go looking for it. Then I browsed your site and the sites at the other end of the links. Being very well aware that this is far from the first time the Roma and Romani have endured such treatment I went to a certain section of my library, chose four books almost at random, and in about forty-five minutes found material of which the following extracts are a small, representative sample, and with all of which I’m sure you are very familiar -- these remarks of mine are just an effort to partially vacuum my own conscience. Please note that none of the books are written specifically on the topic of the Roma, Romani or “Gypsies” and the extracts were found simply by looking up “Gypsy” in the indices. I have added some brief notations in square brackets. Following from: “Atlas of the Holocaust,” Martin Gilbert, Pergamon Press, 1988, p.141 (..) Europe’s Gypsies were marked for destruction by the Nazis. Following a decree of 16 December 1942, all German Gypsies were deported to Auschwitz. On 29 March 1943 the order was given to deport all Dutch Gypsies to Auschwitz. All over Europe, as shown above [map], Gypsy communities were destroyed. Several Gypsy revolts are recorded. But…the Gypsies had to face a combination of artificially intensified ‘race’ hatred, meticulous planning, continual deception, and overwhelming military power. Many Gypsies were deported to Jewish ghettos. In Lithuania the Gestapo locked 1,000 Gypsies in a synagogue until they died of starvation. Hundreds were killed…as at Babi Yar. [n.b. see also A. Anatoli’s (Kuznetsov) “Babi Yar” -- the uncensored, post-1970 edition smuggled out of Soviet Russia in 1969.] At Valogne, Lierenfeld and Ravensbruck, hundreds of Gypsy women were sterilized. By 1945 more than 220,000 [probably many more] of Europe’s 700,000 Gypsies had been murdered by the Nazis. Following from: “Auschwitz: 1270 to the Present,” Deborah Dwork & Robert Jan van Pelt, W.W. Norton & Company, 1996 p. 103 [c.1938] Asocials [sic] were now defined as vagabonds, beggars, pimps (past, present, or even just suspected), and “persons with several convictions for creating disorders, doing bodily harm, causing brawls, breaking the peace, etc., who have thus demonstrated that they are not prepared to fit into the national community.” Even more ominously, Heydrich also included “gypsies and persons travelling in gypsy fashion who have shown no desire for regular work or have violated the law…” Ethnicity had become a salient factor. [Note: “Asocials” were generally sent to concentration camps for slave labor or extermination.] pp. 143-144 For him [Heydrich] it was an accounting operation, a debit and credit ledger, deportations against settlement. “The deportations carried out so far involved around 87,000…from the Warthegau who provided space for the Baltic Germans who were to be settled there,” he reported in January 1940. The “evacuation” of another…30,000 Gypsies…was “for the sake of the Wolhynian Germans.” p. 320 “Eichmann’s program will continue,” Himmler announced, “and will be accelerated every month from now on. The Gypsies are to be exterminated.” [It’s difficult to get any more explicit than that.] Following from: “The Buchenwald Report,” David A Hackett, trans., Westview Press, 1995 [1st English translation of “Bericht uber das Konzentrationslager Buchenwald bei Weimar” prepared in April & May, 1945 by a special intelligence team from the Psychological Warfare Division, SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force), assisted by a committee of Buchenwald prisoners. Everything opposed to or inconsistent with National Socialist rule and its theory of state had to be removed. This meant primarily political opponents, to which Jews were automatically counted, along with criminals, elements regarded as antisocial, homosexuals, and Gypsies. Jehovah’s Witnesses were included because they rejected the military ideology and principles of the state. Also included were personalities from the major religious denominations regarded as hostile or dangerous to National Socialism. p. 72 Designation [for barbaric medical experiments] was made by SS Lieutenant General [Arthur] Nebe, who “also wanted to send Gypsies, who were rejected as unsuitable by Dr. Ding-Schuler, at the urging of the prisoners.” pp. 89-90 Children were delivered into the camp in growing numbers, too. The youngest “partisan” was three and a half years old…In the end there were 877 boys between three and a half and twelve years old whom the National Socialists had preserved as special examples of the “protective custody” methods they undertook…the SS sorted out and herded together all Jewish children and Gypsy boys for transport to Auschwitz for gassing. The SS used carbines and pistols to drive away the screaming, crying children, who desperately wanted to return to their fathers [.] pp. 123-124 [following two events are the testimony of witness Franz Eichhorn] In spring 1938 a Gypsy made an escape attempt but was soon caught. As exemplary punishment the sadist Koch [commandant] thought up the following gruesome treatment: The Gypsy was placed in a wooden crate that had wire netting in place of wood on one side. The…victim had to sit in this crate in a bent-over position. In addition the crate was held together by long nails driven from the outside to the inside, so that with his slightest movement the nails dug deep into his flesh. In this cage the Gypsy was placed on display in roll call square for two days and three nights. His horrible cries no longer sounded human. Finally, on the morning of the third day, he was put out of his misery with a lethal injection. At the end of December 1944, a young Gypsy woman was to be hanged. On the way to the place of execution, she threw herself on the ground…[T]he SS men could not bring her to her feet. Then deputy commandant Gust, who happened to be passing by, shot the young woman in the head (..) p. 138 In the famine winter of 1939…Gypsies in particular died like flies…only a few out of several hundred were still living by summer. p. 212 Wagner…began mass liquidation by injection [often direct injection of phenol into the heart with a cardiac needle -- it could be a horrendous death] in Buchenwald. His victims were mainly Gypsies from the Burgenland [Austria]. Dr. Neumann…practiced vivisections on prisoners. He cut pieces out of the livers of living bodies, causing all his victims to die in wretched pain. Following from: “Justice at Nuremberg,” Robert E Conot, Harper & Row, 1983, p. 375 More than 16,000 Gypsies had been locked up in Auschwitz although…they had not been considered “enemies of the Reich,” but merely out of place in the Nazi scheme of things. (Some men, either part or full Gypsies, serving in the Wehrmacht [the regular Army] had returned home during the war to discover that their families had disappeared; others, even though wounded and decorated, had themselves been shipped off to concentration camps.) By August of 1944 the Gypsies had been reduced to four thousand in number. Because of the filth and starvation, they had been ravaged by diseases unknown to medicine since the Dark Ages. When Himmler had come to Auschwitz and seen children with grotesquely twisted bodies, with faces without noses and teeth protruding through skinless cheeks, he had taken pity. Everyone in the Gypsy compound was to be gassed, he had ordered, as a “humanitarian solution.” [Almost a literal realization of one of Bosch’s or Breughel’s conceptions of hell.] [End Quotes] There is an ancient legal maxim codified, I believe, at least since Magna Charta that “Silence implies consent.” The concept is meant to be applied to an individual’s reason and/or conscience, but perhaps it can be extended to the mechanisms of mass communication as well? I don’t know; my area is math, not history or philosophy or theology, and the answer requires more wisdom than I possess. The Nazis came and went and people seem to be just about as good and bad as they ever were. I’ll shut up now and close this bloated “Thank You for the Reminder” -- apparently you possess the integrity you project so effectively on the canvas and the screen. Peace, Health & Happiness XYZ PS: On a less gloomy note, I think, among other things, that the third segment of Personal Velocity is the only one that works well, that a father who feeds his daughter’s dolls to the disposal really deserves to end up as a few pounds of hand ground chuck, and that Marlon Brando having his cranium chilled like shellfish or a precocious white burgundy is one of the all-time great scenes of pure cinematic delirium. (Even taking account of “Seconds,” and “The Manchurian Candidate,” who would’ve thought John Frankenheimer could make Fellini, Terry Gilliam and Vera Chytilová look like Ron Howard, Gabriel Axel or Frank Capra?) May they long endure. Thank you once again.

More than 16,000 Gypsies had been locked up in Auschwitz although…they had not been considered “enemies of the Reich,” but merely out of place in the Nazi scheme of things. Everyone in the Gypsy compound was to be gassed, he had ordered, as a “humanitarian solution.” [Almost a literal realization of one of Bosch’s or Breughel’s conceptions of hell.]

    [End Quotes]

There is an ancient legal maxim codified, I believe, at least since Magna Charta that “Silence implies consent.” The concept is meant to be applied to an individual’s reason and/or conscience, but perhaps it can be extended to the mechanisms of mass communication as well? I don’t know; my area is math, not history or philosophy or theology, and the answer requires more wisdom than I possess. The Nazis came and went and people seem to be just about as good and bad as they ever were.

I’ll shut up now and close this bloated “Thank You for the Reminder” -- apparently you possess the integrity you project so effectively on the canvas and the screen.

    Peace, Health & Happiness

PS: On a less gloomy note, I think, among other things, that the third segment of Personal Velocity is the only one that works well, that a father who feeds his daughter’s dolls to the disposal really deserves to end up as a few pounds of hand ground chuck, and that Marlon Brando having his cranium chilled like shellfish or a precocious white burgundy is one of the all-time great scenes of pure cinematic delirium.

I am the same way about my art. If things don't flow a certain way and I am pretty far along with a piece I have to walk away so I don't rip it to shreds. I then come back to it on a different day with a new set of eyes. If it's still not working I start over ha ha. You story about going into nature to get some peace and inspiration is very similar to a recent piece I did. It was a HUGE 3 piece painting set of a fall landscape. Not usually my style or work but I accepted the challenge. At one point I had hit a bump in the road and my husband Frank said "how about stop painting nature and lets go out and enjoy some nature. Maybe it will inspire you more." He was so right. We went to a forest preserve type area that has a lot of hills and open areas as well. We flew kites and I took some photos of some trees and foliage. Worked like a charm. Also I love your Mom's Etsy shop. I am on there as well.. as Living Dead Girl Nicole. I favorited her shop. If she ever has questions feel free to have her reach out to me. Been using it for years.
